The Difference
Between Looking
And Seeing

Two divers can do the exact same dive and surface with completely different experiences. One saw “some fish and a rock.” The other saw a cleaning station, a territorial dispute, a camouflaged predator, and a species found nowhere else on Earth. The water was identical. The knowledge was not.

That is the promise of the PADI Underwater Naturalist specialty – part of our Adventure Diver programme. It does not change the ocean. It changes you, and suddenly the sea is full of stories you can read. We sat down with recent students to hear what it did for their diving.

Without a framework, marine life is just a blur of colour. You cannot notice what you cannot name. Students told us they signed up precisely because they felt they were missing something: “I wanted to understand the ecosystem that invited me in,” said one. Another joined to make “plain-looking” creatures interesting – and discovered that once you understand them, nothing underwater is plain.

The specialty gives you that framework. Students singled out learning classification – how scientists organise life into groups – as the moment it clicked. “Categorising it made everything fall into place,” one said. “I learned so much I never knew.” Suddenly a dive has structure, and your eyes know what to look for.

The Experience

The real test of any course is what changes afterward – and the answers were telling. One instructor planned to bring the feedback style and approach straight into teaching Open Water students. Another resolved to give “just one creature” special attention on every single dive, making real eye contact with the ocean. A third decided to log dives differently: not “saw this, saw that,” but confirming and recording at least one identified group every time.

Asked which marine animals they most wanted to meet, the wish-lists turned poetic: the nautilus and horseshoe crab – “living fossils” – and dolphins, with one student only half-joking about learning to speak in ultrasound. That is what this specialty does. It turns curiosity into a lifelong relationship with the sea.

Korea’s waters are a naturalist’s classroom. The East Sea, the South Sea, and Jeju span cool-temperate and warm currents, so you can observe everything from kelp forests and towering winter anemones to lionfish, soft corals, and seasonal visitors. Learning to identify and understand them transforms local diving from routine into endless discovery.
