“You’re too slow in the water – keep up.” “Sorry, it’s always cold at this center. Just deal with it.” “Refunds aren’t possible once training has started – you signed the form.”
These aren’t hypothetical complaints. They’re real things students tell us when they arrive at NB Divers after trying somewhere else. Some of them waited months before trying again. A few almost gave up on scuba entirely.
The scuba industry has a problem: too many centers treat certification as a product, not an education. They time-box lessons. They offer the cheapest possible wetsuit experience. They lock students into contracts with no flexibility.

The Founder
Charlie Jung – The Instructor Who Chose a Mission Over a Career
Charlie Jung (정회승) began diving as a university student after a chance recommendation from a senior. The decisive moment came during a research expedition to Dokdo – a remote island in the East Sea, untouched and teeming with curious fish that had never learned to be afraid of people.
“I wanted to protect what I saw,” he says. “And I wanted other people to see it too.”
That feeling sent him abroad to earn his PADI instructor certification. In 1999, he became a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor. By 2006, he had become Korea’s youngest-ever PADI Course Director – the highest teaching credential in recreational diving, globally. He has since trained more than 970 instructors, many of whom now run dive operations across Asia.
His credentials include 6,000+ dive logs (since 1995), EFR Instructor Trainer, TecDeep Instructor Trainer, GUE/UTD Tec 2, TDI/NAUI Cave Diver, DAN Oxygen Provider Instructor, and professional underwater photography for National Geographic, Red Bull, and the Mariana Visitors Authority.
The Turning Point
What a Dive with a Deaf Student Taught Us About the Ocean
Early in his teaching career, Charlie was asked to guide a group from a disability organization – students who were deaf and mute. He went in expecting to manage logistics. What he found changed how he understood scuba entirely.
Underwater, those students were not disabled. In a world without sound, their sign language traveled perfectly through the water. They were more comfortable, more fluent down there than he was.
“Below the surface, the ocean doesn’t know your diagnosis. It doesn’t check your age, your fitness level, or your swimming speed. It just holds you.”
He also taught a blind student who descended to a sandy seabed and picked up a handful of sand – then let it drift slowly through their fingers. “Sand sticks to your hand in air. Under water, it flows away clean. I wanted to feel that.”
These moments gave NB Divers its core principle: every person arrives at the water with something different to find there. The instructor’s job is to help them find it. That is the mission behind “Learn Right, Enjoy Forever.”
The Philosophy
Three Principles That Have Never Changed in 26 Years
NB Divers runs on three educational commitments. These are not marketing language. They are the operational rules Charlie wrote when he opened the center in 2000 and has enforced without exception since.
Principle 01
At Your Pace. Always Safely.
A slower swimmer gets more pool time. A nervous student works one-on-one for as long as they need. NB Divers does not advertise time-limited courses because we do not offer them. Certification happens when the student is ready – not when the calendar says so.
If a personal situation interrupts your training, partial refunds are available. If the course doesn’t feel right before certification, you receive a full refund. No contract language overrides your right to leave.
We carry professional dive insurance because the ocean is unpredictable, not because we expect accidents. In 26 years, we have had zero diving accidents. We’d like to keep that number unchanged.
Principle 02
Cold Is Not the Same as Suffering
There is a difference between cool water and being cold. The first is a sensation – surprising and then pleasant. The second is misery, and it has no place in quality dive education.
Charlie has dived under ice in Hokkaido. He knows cold water. NB Divers equips students with Fourth Element dry suits for cold-water training – the same premium thermal protection used by technical divers and polar explorers. You will learn to dive comfortably in any season, any water temperature Korea offers.
No student should spend their open-water training shivering and counting the minutes to get out. If that has been your experience elsewhere, it doesn’t have to be your experience here.

No Surprises. Complete Transparency.
Before your first session, you receive the full schedule and a complete cost breakdown. The price includes eLearning access, gear rental, pool fees, instructor time, open-water dive logistics, and your certification card. Nothing is hidden in small print.
Instructor and student schedules are agreed together. Adjustments are made together. Training days run on mutual readiness – because diving safely requires both parties to be in the right condition.

What Students Ask Before They Commit

I swim slowly. Will I struggle to keep up?
No. Slow swimmers receive extended pool time. We never compress training to fit a schedule. Your pace is the schedule.

Can I get a refund if the course isn’t working for me?
Before certification is issued: full refund. During the course with personal circumstances: partial refund based on completed sessions. No refund is denied without conversation.

How do I get to the dive center?
NB Divers is a short walk from Jamsil Sports Complex Station (잠실종합운동장역), Lines 2 and 9. We send a location pin when you book. Non-Korean visitors can use English KakaoTaxi or standard navigation apps with the Korean address.

How long does the PADI Open Water course take?
Typically three to four days: eLearning at home, two pool days in Seoul, and four open-water dives on Korea’s east coast or Jeju. Pace adjusts to comfort. We do not rush.
